We need to design less stuff
A couple of months ago, the brilliant Pete Trainor from Nexus wrote a great article on how to create for chatbots. Before he wrote that article, the two of us sat down at Silicon Beach (one of the best and friendliest conferences you’ll ever attend) to discuss using data in creativity.
As a designer, Pete believes that we should be designing less stuff. Very often people are solving problems that don’t actually exist. Instead of doing that we should use data to see how people are behaving and design for that. We should design only what’s necessary to enrich a person.
We should use data to see how people are behaving and design for that
Before Pete had to dash off for a train, we talked about:
- How to use data to get human insight
- The importance of playing data back to people in a more inspiring way
- How they used advertising tools to identify men at risk of suicide
- The importance of curiousity
- The danger of creating a frictionless world that’s too easy on us
- Embracing serendipity
- What the business opportunity is for AI
Pete also wrote the best-selling book, Hippo: The Human Focused Digital Book which we talk about in the interview. We’re going to be doing a giveaway of a stack of Hippos in the next few weeks, so don’t be a stranger!
