Many leaders and specialists get hooked on inspirational messaging, ‘rebranding’ vision and mission statements. They fall into the trap of pitching creativity campaigns or having ‘change’ workshops that will magically deliver this new vibrant culture. Cue much eye rolling from employees and get ready for a crash and burn campaign. The missed step is the hard work of getting people’s minds ready for change; honest reflection and communication of the discomfort necessary. Organisation leaders and HR answering these questions is the smart place to start for any company serious building a lasting culture of creativity and innovation.

I often find that companies want to be seen to be playing in the creative or innovation space but they’re not prepared for the discomfort and challenges that comes with putting it into practice. I’m going to start using some of these questions in my early conversations too! Starting the process with some sticky questions is so much better than encountering them later on, once time and resources have been invested.
